For many years I have had the goal of getting a pattern published in Knitty.  For a while I was actively thinking about it, but then life got in the way and I didn’t think about it as much anymore. Today that goal has been reached, and it is my proud pleasure to introduce to you Urban Tribe.

I have had this design planned out in my head for a few years now.  I didn’t cast on for a long time because I wasn’t sure which yarn(s) I wanted to use, but also I hadn’t completely decided on the exact spacing in the chevron section.  Last winter I decided I had enough time mulling over this design – it was time to cast on and see what would happen.  I worked up a swatch, decided how many to cast on and never looked back.

When I originally designed this piece I was going to have the chevron section on both sides… maybe in reverse colors (which is still an option for all of you knitters out there), but after knitting the first chevron section I decided that I wanted to mix things up a bit and also add a fourth color.  That’s when this piece was put on hold.  I knew the look I wanted – something completely different from the chevrons (which were inspired mostly by my daily drives through LA and all the freeways and urban lines), I wanted something a little more…. something…. I couldn’t put my finger on it.

I started playing around and creating color charts for the side of the cowl.  I must have sketched out at least 10 designs before I settled on this exact one.  After looking at all my color designs I realized I had gone in the complete other direction and had entered a realm of tribal designs.  I guess what I was looking for was more tribal.

I give to you Urban Tribe.  Knitting this piece was a bitter sweet experience for me – I really enjoyed knitting this pattern and the charts where pretty east to memorize (meaning I could watch TV and work on this piece at the same time… which is VERY VERY important), the bitter part came when I finished :-( I didn’t want it to be over, I was having too much fun.  Hopefully you will cast on for this project and share it with me, that way I can vicariously live through your stitches.  Enjoy!
